You know the one. That corner of the garden where the sun only shines for a few hours a day. Too dark for many perennials, but not dark enough for true shade-loving plants either. The result? A border with a bit of moss and weeds that do manage to thrive there. It’s a shame, because it’s these spots that have so much potential.
Fortunately, we’ve already put the combination together for you. This ready-to-plant border pack for partial shade has been specially curated for spots with a mix of sun and shade. All you have to do is plant and enjoy.

A beautiful selection

Alchemilla Mollis (Lady’s Mantle)

Soft, pleated leaves that catch raindrops like pearls. Blooms in spring with a cloud of yellow-green flowers that lend a light, romantic touch to the border. Lady’s mantle suppresses weeds, requires virtually no maintenance and grows slightly fuller and more lush each year. It owes its name to the ruffled leaves, which are said to resemble a medieval woman’s cloak – a fun fact to surprise your guests with.

Leucanthemum Vulgare (Daisy)

The daisy you recognise from flower meadows and roadside bouquets, this is the one. Radiant white ray florets surrounding a yellow centre, 30 to 70 centimetres tall and in bloom from May to August. Leucanthemum Vulgare is the wild ancestor of many cultivated daisy varieties and is known as one of the best insect-attracting plants in our region — hoverflies, bees and butterflies flock to it in droves. Did you know that a single daisy flower actually consists of dozens of tiny florets? The yellow centre consists of disc florets, whilst the white petals surrounding it are the ray florets. Nature at its finest.

Geranium Macrorrhizum (Cranesbill)

One of the most reliable groundcovers in existence. This cranesbill grows to a height of 20 to 50 centimetres, spreads steadily via thick, fleshy rhizomes and forms a dense carpet that consistently keeps weeds at bay. From May to June, it blooms with pink to magenta flowers. The foliage is semi-evergreen, smells herbaceous when touched and turns fiery red in autumn. Thanks to its rhizomes, it is particularly drought-tolerant, making it ideal under trees where the soil dries out.

Fragaria Vesca (Wild strawberry)

The surprise of the package. Not only beautiful as a ground cover with its delicate white flowers in spring, but also edible. The small, wild strawberries taste more intense and aromatic than the cultivated strawberries from the supermarket, because they are given more time to ripen on the plant. Snacking from your own border – that’s gardening with a smile :).

Tips for the best results

Part-shade plants thrive best in light, humus-rich soil that retains moisture well but does not remain too wet. When planting, add a spadeful of compost or potting soil for extra nutrients and good soil structure. Plant each variety in a group of three, spaced 25–30 cm apart, so the plants have room to develop. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting to help the roots establish themselves. After that, they are self-sufficient plants that require little attention and provide a lovely surprise every season.

Organically grown, naturally robust

All plants are certified organic (NL-BIO-01), grown without artificial fertilisers or chemical pesticides. They are supplied in a half-litre pot (P9), small in size, but with a sturdy root system ready to take hold immediately.
