That sunny border deserves better than weeds
Full sun, all day long. It sounds like the ideal conditions for a beautiful garden, and it is. Yet for many gardeners, that sunny strip remains a blind spot. Too busy to really think about it, too many choices to make a decision, or simply no idea which plants will thrive there.
We’ve done the hard work for you. This ready-to-plant border pack for full sun has everything you need. All you have to do is plant and enjoy.
What you’re getting
This unassuming plant, with its delicate white to pale purple flowers, attracts more bees, bumblebees and butterflies per square centimetre than almost any other garden plant. The leaves have a fresh, herbaceous scent, slightly reminiscent of mint, and were once used as a home remedy for digestive complaints and headaches. In the border, calamintha flowers continuously from June to October, even when most other plants have long since finished flowering. It asks for little, never complains, and cheerfully reappears year after year.
A plant with a story. Centuries ago, people squeezed the leaves to wash clothes. The plant naturally contains saponins, a kind of plant-based soap that lathers in water. Nowadays, it is grown in borders for its graceful pink flowers, which appear in summer and keep blooming well into autumn. Soapwort is imperturbably strong, spreads calmly and, in the evening, beckons with its soft scent to moths that tend to ignore most other plants.
The name may sound ordinary, but this is far from an ordinary plant. Its finely pinnate leaves have been known in folk medicine for centuries; according to legend, the Greek hero Achilles used it to treat wounds, hence the Latin name. In the border, it shines with flat flower heads that last for months and attract an impressive procession of insects. One of the most valuable plants for biodiversity that you can grow in your garden.
Can you smell that warm, Mediterranean scent? That’s marjoram. On pizza, in tomato sauce, with grilled meat — this is the herb that tastes of summer. But in the border, it does even more: the tiny pink flowers that appear in summer attract bees like no other. Marjoram has been at the top of the list of plants receiving the most bee visits per day for years. You get to enjoy your own garden and help nature at the same time – two birds with one stone.
No sooner said than done
Finding the right perennials for full sun, trying out combinations and hoping they work takes time you might not have. This pack is a carefully curated selection of plants that complement each other: in flowering time, in height, in scent. They are all perennials, so planting them once is enough; they’ll come back on their own every spring. No hassle, no replanting, just more garden with less effort.
Good for the garden, good for nature
Lesser calamint, yarrow and marjoram are among the best bee-friendly plants you can choose. Together, they provide a continuous display of flowers from early spring right through to late autumn, exactly when bees and bumblebees need food. Soapwort fills the evening hours with visitors that are missed during the day. A sunny border full of life, for you and for the world around you.
How best to plant them
Sun-loving plants thrive in loose, well-drained soil. You can lighten heavy or clay-like soil by working in some sand and mature compost before planting. Leave a gap of 25 to 30 centimetres and plant each variety in groups of three for a natural effect. The plants deserve a bit of extra attention and water in the first few weeks; after that, they’ll manage perfectly well on their own — they’re drought-tolerant and undemanding.
Certified organic
No artificial fertilisers, no pesticides. All plants are organically grown and come in a half-litre P9 pot. Compactly packed, but with a root system ready for the open ground. Choosing organic means choosing plants that are naturally stronger and a garden that is in harmony with its surroundings.
