A partly shaded border does not have to flower for just a few weeks. With the 3 Seasons of Flowers – Part Shade – Organic, the season begins while the rest of the garden is only just waking up and continues well into autumn.

The pack combines 18 organic perennial plants with 200 organic flower bulbs. Crocuses, glory-of-the-snow, Puschkinia and small daffodils start the season. Brunnera, bleeding heart and Geranium then take over. In summer, salmon-pink Achillea and the tall flower spikes of Persicaria appear. Deep pink Anemone ‘Splendens’ and white ‘Whirlwind’ complete the flowering season.

One flower follows another, allowing the border to change colour, height and character throughout three seasons.

Spring begins close to the ground

The flowering season starts with 200 spring bulbs. Crocuses appear first, followed by white glory-of-the-snow, pale blue Puschkinia and compact yellow ‘Tête-à-Tête’ daffodils.

This works particularly well beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Early in spring, plenty of light can still reach the ground. Later in the season, the developing canopy provides more shelter and shade.

As the spring bulbs start to retreat, the perennial plants are already ready to take over.

Blue, pink and fresh green in spring

Brunnera macrophylla produces clouds of small bright blue flowers above large, heart-shaped leaves in April and May. Beside them, Dicentra spectabilis adds its distinctive pink and white heart-shaped flowers.

Geranium macrorrhizum fills the lower parts of the border. Its aromatic foliage creates a dense green base, with pink to purplish-pink flowers appearing from May onwards.

Together they turn part shade into a fresh and lively part of the garden.

Summer adds height to the border

The appearance changes again as summer progresses.

Achillea ‘Lachsschönheit’ produces warm salmon-pink flower heads that gradually fade to paler tones. Position it in the brightest part of the border where possible.

Persicaria amplexicaulis grows taller and develops long red to pink-red flower spikes from summer onwards, adding both height and movement.

Japanese anemones finish the season

When many summer flowers begin to fade, the anemones take over.

Anemone ‘Splendens’ produces open deep-pink flowers, while ‘Whirlwind’ provides a contrast with its white, semi-double blooms and warm yellow centres.

Together they keep the border light and colourful from August well into October.

A naturally layered border

The different heights have been deliberately combined.

The spring bulbs remain low. Geranium and Brunnera then create the lower layer. Achillea and Dicentra fill the middle, while Persicaria and the anemones bring height towards the back.

Avoid planting everything in strict rows. Position the perennials naturally and plant the bulbs in loose groups between them.

Over time, the individual plants will increasingly grow together into one cohesive border.
