• What is the difference between a semi-cactus and a cactus dahlia?
  In a true cactus dahlia, the petals are completely rolled up into narrow tubes over more than half their length. In a semi-cactus dahlia, the petals are slightly rolled up at the base and taper to a point, but are wider than those of the true cactus dahlia. The result is a slightly fuller, more approachable silhouette.
• When should you plant semi-cactus dahlias?
  Plant the tubers outdoors from mid-March to May, once the soil has warmed up sufficiently and the risk of night frost has passed. You can start them off indoors in a pot from early March for earlier flowering.
• When do semi-cactus dahlias flower?
  Semi-cactus dahlias flower from July right through to autumn, sometimes even until the first frost. By pinching out the tips early in the season, you encourage more side shoots and thus a longer and more abundant flowering period.
• Are semi-cactus dahlias hardy?
  No, dahlias are sensitive to frost. Dig up the tubers after the first frost or once the foliage has died back, and store them in a dry, frost-free, dark place at around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.
• Are semi-cactus dahlias suitable as cut flowers?
  Absolutely; they are ideal for the cutting garden and for vases. Cut the stem diagonally early in the morning or on a cool evening, when about two-thirds of the flower has opened. They will stay fresh in water for a week or longer.
