Frequently asked questions about hyacinths

• When should you plant hyacinth bulbs?
  It is best to plant hyacinth bulbs from September through to December, before the first frost. The earlier you plant them, the more time the bulb has to develop roots before winter.
• When do hyacinths flower?
  Outdoors, hyacinths usually flower between March and May, as one of the first fragrant spring flowers. Hyacinths in a bowl indoors may flower even earlier.
• Can you also grow hyacinths indoors?
  Absolutely. A hyacinth in a bowl, such as our Fondant with Artstone bowl, is specially designed for this purpose. Place the bowl in a cool, light spot and the bulb will do the rest – no potting soil or extra care required.
• Are hyacinths bee-friendly?
  Yes, hyacinths flower in early spring and are therefore a valued food source for the first bees and bumblebees to become active.
• Do hyacinths come back every year?
  Hyacinths are hardy and perennial. If you let the foliage die back naturally after flowering, they will return in subsequent years – though often with slightly sparser flower clusters than in the first year.
• Are hyacinths toxic to pets?
  Yes, hyacinths are mildly toxic to humans and pets, particularly the bulb. It is best to wear gloves when planting, as the sap can cause skin irritation.
