• What is a compact border dahlia?
  A compact border dahlia is a low-growing dahlia, around 50 to 60 centimetres tall, particularly suitable for flowerbeds, pots or containers on the balcony. They flower just as profusely as larger dahlias, but take up less space.
• When should you plant border dahlia tubers?
  Plant the tubers outdoors from mid-May, once the risk of night frost has passed. You can start them off indoors in a pot from early March for slightly earlier flowering.
• Are bedding dahlias suitable for a pot or balcony?
  Yes, compact bedding dahlias are ideally suited to a large pot or planter on a balcony or terrace. Choose a pot at least 30 centimetres deep, use good-quality potting compost with drainage, and place the pot in a sunny spot.
• When do bedding dahlias flower?
  Compact bedding dahlias flower from July until the first frost in autumn, sometimes well into October. The more often you pick or cut the flowers, the longer and more profuse the flowering will be.
• Are bedding dahlias hardy?
  No, dahlias are sensitive to frost. Dig up the tubers after the first frost or once the foliage has died back, and store them in a dry, dark and frost-free place at around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius until the following spring.
• Are compact border dahlias also suitable as cut flowers?
  Certainly. The compact varieties also produce lovely cut flowers. Cut the stem diagonally once about two-thirds of the flower has opened, place them in clean water, and you’ll be able to enjoy them in a vase for a week or more.
