Detail
Most people expect bright red clusters when they think of a currant bush. Gloire de Sablons is an exception to this rule. This unusual variety bears semi-translucent, soft pink berries that, in the sun, almost resemble tiny gemstones. For that reason alone, you’ll find yourself gazing at them for a while. But the surprise isn’t just in the colour. The flavour is milder and sweeter than that of many red currants, making them just as easy to eat straight from the bush as they are to use in a dessert or a summer fruit salad. Gloire de Sablons is also an old French variety dating from 1854 that remains popular to this day for its flavour and distinctive appearance.
A forgotten classic
Some plants fall out of favour over time. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Gloire de Sablons. In fact, more and more enthusiasts are rediscovering this old variety. And that actually makes perfect sense. Whilst many redcurrants are predominantly tart, this pink variety has a much milder flavour. As a result, the first clusters often disappear whilst you’re still tending the garden. In France, this currant used to be regarded as a true dessert berry, because the fruits are so pleasantly sweet.
An instant eye-catcher
Pink currants deserve a spot you pass by regularly. That’s why we don’t supply this organic shrub as a small seedling, but in a P15 pot. This gives you a beautifully shaped shrub right from the start, one that immediately stands out amongst other fruit shrubs. We think that’s particularly important for a variety that looks so distinctive. That way, you’ll not only enjoy the first clusters sooner, but also immediately benefit from a plant that really adds something to your garden.
The sort of plant people ask about
There’s a good chance that visitors will initially think the berries aren’t ripe yet. Until you tell them that they’re actually meant to gleam in that soft pink colour. This is usually followed by the question of whether they taste good too. The best way to answer that is simply by offering them a handful. Because some plants don’t need any explanation. They speak for themselves – both in appearance and taste.
