Detail
Most tulips produce a single flower per stem. The Turkestanica produces several — sometimes as many as twelve at once. This makes it one of the most generous botanical tulips in existence. The flowers are white with a warm yellow-orange centre and rise above the foliage like a small cloud. It blooms in early spring and is one of the first tulips to bring the garden to life.
Straight from Central Asia
Tulipa turkestanica originates from the mountainous regions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — dry, stony slopes where winters are cold and summers are hot and dry. You can see its origins reflected in its character: it is robust, hardy and undemanding. It thrives in well-drained, preferably slightly dry soil and a sunny spot. Plant it in such a spot and it will naturalise itself, year after year.
Planting and combining
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 8–10 cm, in a warm, sunny spot with well-drained soil. They thrive in a rockery, at the front of a border or scattered through the lawn. Combine them with Muscari or Scilla siberica for an early and colourful spring display. They also thrive in a pot on a sunny balcony. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
