Tulipa Tarda - ORG

Tulipa tarda isn’t the first tulip that springs to mind when you’re thinking of planting, but it is the one you’ll miss the most once you’ve got to know it. It’s an early-flowering variety, small and strikingly coloured: a radiant yellow on the inside with a bright white edge along the petals. Each stem produces several flowers at once, which, despite its modest size, gives it a full and generous appearance.

Naturalisation comes naturally

Tulipa tarda is one of the easiest botanical tulips to naturalise. It requires very little: a sunny spot and well-drained soil, and it does the rest itself. It propagates via side bulbs and returns each year with more flowers. In a rockery, at the front of a border or scattered through the grass — wherever the soil isn’t too heavy or damp, it feels right at home.

For the bees, early in the year

Early bees have little choice in March and April. Tulipa tarda opens its flowers wide as soon as the sun shines — precisely when pollinators are active and searching for nectar. A clump of Tarda in the garden is therefore not only a feast for the eyes, but also a welcome first stop for bees and bumblebees after winter.
