Detail
Most tulips choose to leave only the stem green. The Groenland takes this colour a step further in its appearance. This viridiflora tulip — ‘viridiflora’ literally means ‘green-flowered’ — retains its green centre even when the flower is fully open. A pink flower with a broad green stripe across each petal: it is a combination that looks fresh, elegant and almost botanical. It is no surprise that the Groenland has been a classic for many years.
What is a Viridiflora tulip?
Viridiflora tulips are a distinct group within the world of tulips. They have been bred to retain the green colour within the flower — a characteristic that disappears in most other tulips as soon as the flower opens. The green adds a freshness that other tulips lack, and also makes them particularly interesting from a photographic perspective. The Groenland is one of the best-known and most beloved representatives of this group, with its soft pink and bright green combination.
Long-lasting, in the border and in a vase
Viridiflora tulips are known for their long flowering period — they last considerably longer in the border than large hybrid tulips. That makes the Groenland a smart choice for anyone who wants to enjoy them without having to replace them. It is equally impressive as a cut flower: cut it early in the morning when the bud is just beginning to colour, place it in cold water and enjoy watching it slowly open up on your kitchen table.
Planting and combining
Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 15 cm in a sunny, well-drained spot. The ‘Groenland’ combines beautifully with other late-flowering tulips in white or purple, or with early-flowering perennials in shades of green and silver that echo the flower’s green theme. It really comes into its own in a neutral white or earth-toned vase. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
