Detail
‘Snowbelle’ mock orange (Philadelphus ‘Snowbelle’) brings one of those unmistakable scents of early summer to the garden. Its branches become covered with clusters of double, pure-white flowers that resemble small white roses and release the sweet, fresh fragrance for which mock orange is famous.
Unlike some larger Philadelphus varieties, ‘Snowbelle’ develops a relatively compact, rounded habit. It typically grows to around 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, making it easy to use in smaller landscapes as well as traditional shrub borders.
Your organically grown ‘Snowbelle’ is supplied in our Royaal container (P15), giving you a well-established young shrub ready to continue developing after planting.
Where should you plant Snowbelle mock orange?
Plant ‘Snowbelle’ in full sun or partial shade. A sunny location generally produces the heaviest flowering, although the shrub performs well with some light shade. It is adaptable to many garden soils but does best in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Avoid locations where the roots remain waterlogged.
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the root zone evenly moist while the shrub becomes established. Once settled in, ‘Snowbelle’ is relatively easy to care for.
Its fragrance makes it especially rewarding near a patio, entryway, garden path or seating area, where you can enjoy the flowers up close.
When and how should you prune Snowbelle mock orange?
Young mock orange shrubs need very little pruning. For the first few years, remove only dead, damaged or weak stems and allow the plant to develop its naturally rounded framework.
When pruning is needed, prune immediately after flowering. This is important because mock orange flowers on growth produced the previous season. Pruning in winter or early spring can remove the flower buds that would have opened that year.
After flowering, shorten stems that have bloomed back to a healthy younger side shoot or well-positioned bud. As the shrub matures, remove a few of the oldest stems at ground level every few years. This renewal pruning opens the center, encourages vigorous new growth and helps maintain good flowering.
Avoid routinely shearing the entire shrub into a tight shape. Selective pruning preserves the natural form of ‘Snowbelle’ and leaves plenty of young wood to flower the following year.
