    Detail
Spring flowering, Specialty bulbs, Bulbs for bees, Naturalising

Most spring bulbs have finished flowering by May. Ornithogalum ponticum ‘Sochi’, however, is just getting started. This organic star-of-Bethlehem flowers in late spring, producing dozens of silvery-white, star-shaped blooms on sturdy, slender stems. It is not a showy plant that demands all the attention, but one that gives the border exactly what it needs at that moment. And that often turns out to be more than you might think. Meanwhile, wild bees, bumblebees and other pollinators can still find nectar and pollen, particularly during the period between the spring and summer bloomers.

A late bloomer with a purpose

Where tulips, crocuses and most daffodils hand over the baton, Sochi effortlessly takes over. As a result, the border remains vibrant at a time when many other bulbs have already disappeared. The silvery-white flowers combine easily with perennials that are just beginning to emerge, bringing a sense of airiness and tranquillity amidst all the colours of spring. No empty patches, no bare border. Just a garden that carries on for a little while longer.

Stars for the vase

Its sturdy stems and long vase life also make Ornithogalum ponticum ‘Sochi’ an excellent cut flower. A few stems in a slender vase instantly create an airy, starry-sky effect. The flowers open gradually, so you can enjoy them for a long time. Not a lavish bouquet, but rather a subtle eye-catcher that you’ll find yourself looking at time and again.

Easy to please, beautiful for years

Plant the organic bulbs in autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained soil. This star-of-Bethlehem also tolerates partial shade without any problems, meaning it thrives under trees, along a hedge or in other spots where not every spring-flowering plant thrives. The 100% organically grown bulbs are hardy and require little maintenance. Simply let the foliage die back naturally after flowering and the bulb will take care of the rest. Sometimes the quietest plants are simply the smartest choice.
