Detail
In the late 1980s, this unique star-of-Bethlehem was discovered in the forests around Sochi, the Russian resort town on the Black Sea. Since then, Ornithogalum ponticum ‘Sochi’ has become one of the most beloved bulb plants among enthusiasts of more natural, wild-style gardens—and for good reason.
The flowers are pure white with a delicate green stripe, arranged in a long, dense cluster that grows upward in a pyramidal shape. The plant begins to bloom in late May at a height of about 40 cm, and as the blooming period progresses, the flower stems slowly continue to grow to as much as 75 cm. New flowers keep opening—as a result, the blooming period lasts at least three weeks, often longer. Airy, long-lasting, and a little different every day.
Fits perfectly in a wild or prairie garden
Ornithogalum ‘Sochi’ feels right at home in a border with a more natural character. The combination with late-blooming alliums or triteleia is particularly beautiful—the white plumes and the purple-blue bulb flowers complement each other perfectly. It also makes a strong impression as a solitary plant in a quieter corner.
The plant prefers a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Drought is not a problem; it tolerates waterlogging less well. Plant the bulbs in the fall about 10 cm deep and 15 to 20 cm apart. The plant is very hardy and returns every year.
Just as beautiful in a vase
As a cut flower, ‘Sochi’ is highly recommended. Cut the stems just as the lower flowers are beginning to open; this will ensure the longest-lasting enjoyment. It looks fantastic in a vase with wildflowers or other white flowers—light and airy, long-lasting, and with a character all its own.
