There is something surprising about the colour purple in early spring. Whilst the garden is still mostly brown and grey, the Violet River crocus instantly brings colour with its deep violet flowers and velvety shimmer. This organic crocus is one of the earliest to flower each year and looks stunning in a border, on a lawn or in a flowerpot. What’s more, it provides a valuable source of food for wild bees and other pollinators from an early stage.

A colour that never ceases to amaze

The name Violet River suits this special crocus perfectly. When the sun shines on the flowers, they open wide to reveal their bright yellow stamens. The warm yellow contrasts beautifully with the deep purple of the petals, giving the flowers a vibrant appearance. Particularly in February and March, when few other plants are in bloom, Violet River immediately catches the eye. Plant it in a group for a natural effect, or combine it with white or yellow crocuses for a colourful spring palette that comes to life year after year.

Early food for pollinators

Like many early-flowering crocuses, Violet River blooms just as wild bees, bumblebee queens and other pollinators are searching for their first food. Nectar and pollen are still scarce at this time of year, meaning these organic crocus bulbs make a valuable contribution to biodiversity in your garden. The bulbs are 100% organically grown, without chemical fertilisers or synthetic pesticides. This way, you’re choosing a garden where flowers, insects and soil life can flourish together naturally.

Easy to plant, years of enjoyment

Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 8 cm in a sunny to lightly shaded spot with well-drained soil. Plant them on their own, or combine them with yellow or white crocuses for a vibrant colour contrast. In a lawn or under trees, it naturalises effortlessly and the clump expands further each year. Allow the foliage to wither naturally after flowering, so that the bulb can recharge for the following season.
