Detail
Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty,’ or sunflower, brings warmth to the garden at just the right moment. As the fresh green of summer slowly gives way to richer late-summer colors, the copper-red flowers with their striking dark brown centers appear. The color isn’t entirely static, though. As the flowers develop, you’ll see shades of warm orange-red, copper, and reddish-brown side by side. This gives ‘Moerheim Beauty’ a natural look that blends beautifully with ornamental grasses and other late-summer bloomers.
A border full of warm colors
Sunflower forms an upright, bushy clump and adds lovely height to the center or back of a sunny border. Combine ‘Moerheim Beauty’ with purple verbena, agastache, soft pink yarrow, or golden-yellow rudbeckia, for example. The warm flower colors also stand out beautifully among ornamental grasses. The open, daisy-like flowers are popular with bees and other pollinators. This is especially valuable later in the season, as the selection of flowering plants gradually dwindles.
Give sunflower sun and plenty of moisture
Helenium prefers a sunny spot in nutrient-rich soil that retains sufficient moisture but allows excess water to drain away easily. Especially during hot, dry periods, make sure the soil does not dry out completely for long periods. Remove spent flowers regularly to keep the plant looking neat and blooming longer. In an open, windy spot, the longer flower stems may need some support. The plant is delivered as a young, well-rooted plant in a compact P9 pot. After planting, it develops into a hardy perennial that sprouts anew every spring.
A lovely choice for those who want to keep the warm colors and vitality in their garden well into late summer.
