Grape Hyacinth - Muscari Armeniacum - ORG

There are few colours in nature that make such an immediate impression as the blue of the Muscari. Not subtle, not ambiguous — simply a radiant blue, compact and full of character. Muscari armeniacum has been a staple of European gardens for over one hundred and fifty years, and with good reason: it grows anywhere, naturalises effortlessly and flowers reliably year after year in April and May.

Small in size, big on impact

The grape-like flowers are only ten to fifteen centimetres tall, but in a group of twenty or more they are impossible to miss. They look stunning as ground cover beneath tulips — the blue brings out the warm pink and red hues of the tulips, and vice versa. But they also thrive in a pot on the balcony, in a border or growing wild amongst the grass. They readily self-seed and expand gently year after year.

An early meal for bees

In mid-spring, just as the tulips are beginning to open, Muscari armeniacum is already offering nectar. The small, bulb-shaped flowers are just the right size for bumblebees and bees. A border full of grape hyacinths is therefore not only beautiful — it’s also simply good for the garden and everything that lives in it.

Plant and forget

Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 8–10 cm and 5–8 cm apart. They grow in full sun or partial shade and are not fussy about soil type. Once planted, you need do nothing more. After flowering, simply let the foliage die back naturally — the bulb will recharge for the following year. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01.
