Detail
Geranium macrorrhizum ‘Bevan’s Variety,’ or cranesbill, is a perennial that proves its worth in many parts of the garden. In the spring, deep pink to purplish-pink flowers appear above the fresh green foliage. Beneath them, the plant continues to grow quietly, forming a dense, low carpet. The foliage has another distinctive feature: when you brush against it or rub it between your fingers, it releases a distinctly aromatic scent. In a mild winter, some of the foliage remains on the plant, allowing ‘Bevan’s Variety’ to provide texture even outside the blooming season.
A groundcover for both easy and challenging spots
‘Bevan’s Variety’ gradually spreads into a broad clump via short rhizomes. This makes it ideal as a groundcover under shrubs, along a border, or in areas where you’d like to keep the ground naturally covered. This geranium adapts surprisingly well to a variety of conditions. Sun and partial shade are fine, but it also thrives in full shade. Once well-established, it can even tolerate fairly dry spots, such as under trees and shrubs. Preferably plant it in humus-rich, well-drained soil. After planting, regular watering is important until the plant is well-established.
Also attractive to pollinators
The open flowers are easily accessible to bees and other pollinators. Especially in May, June, and July, the many flowers together create a wonderful feeding spot in the garden.
Combine ‘Bevan’s Variety’ with ferns, Alchemilla, Dicentra, Hosta, or other perennials suited for partial shade. It also works beautifully as a low-growing groundcover beneath taller plants. After flowering, you can cut back old flower stems and less attractive foliage. This encourages the growth of fresh new foliage and keeps the plant compact and neat.
A robust, versatile perennial for those who enjoy combining greenery, flowers, and natural ground cover.
