Echinacea p. Magnus - Compact - ORG

Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’, also known as purple coneflower, is a perennial that’s hard to miss in the summer. The large pink flowers can grow 10 to 15 centimeters wide and stand on sturdy stems above the green foliage. In the center, the warm orange-brown cone provides a beautiful contrast to the broad pink petals. ‘Magnus’ is distinguished by its relatively horizontal petals. This makes the flowers appear large and open, giving the plant that characteristic, vigorous appearance for which Echinacea is so beloved. 

A summer bloomer for bees and butterflies

New flowers continue to appear from July through September. Bees, bumblebees, and butterflies are drawn to the striking flower heads, so on sunny days there’s often plenty of activity around the plant. With a final height of about 80 to 100 centimeters, ‘Magnus’ fits nicely in the middle or at the back of a sunny border. Pair it, for example, with Achillea, Agastache, Verbena, Rudbeckia, or ornamental grasses. The pink flowers add color, while the sturdy growth provides lovely structure to a more open planting scheme.

Give Echinacea plenty of sun and well-drained soil

Plant ‘Magnus’ in a sunny spot in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Once well-established, Echinacea can handle drier periods quite well. Especially in winter, it’s important that excess water can drain easily from the soil. You can remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming. You can also leave a few seed heads in place at the end of the season. They add structure to the border in winter and can provide food for seed-eating birds.

The sturdy flower stems also make ‘Magnus’ a great cut flower. Just a few flowers instantly add color and character to a summer bouquet.

The plant is delivered as a young, well-rooted plant in a compact P9 pot. After planting, it grows into a strong, hardy perennial that returns year after year.
