The large-flowered crocus certainly lives up to its name. Crocus vernus — the species from which almost all garden crocuses are descended — has sturdier, broader flowers than its small-flowered cousins. They stand upright in the grass or in a border and are clearly visible even from a distance. The yellow crocuses contrast beautifully with the purple ones, whilst the white ones tie the whole display together. A wonderful interplay to enjoy!

A special characteristic

When snow falls, the large-flowered crocus closes its flower. It waits patiently for the temperature to rise, and then opens up again — as if nothing had happened. That resilience is one of the reasons why the crocus has been a favourite in European gardens for centuries. No drama, just patience. And then there’s that colour, sudden and abundant.

For the bees, early in the season

When the large-flowered crocus blooms — as early as March, sometimes even late February — there is hardly anything else in bloom. For bees and bumblebees, hungry and searching for nectar after winter, this is a welcome first meal. If you plant a cluster of them, you’ll have a garden buzzing with activity early in the year.

Naturalisation and care

Plant the bulbs in the autumn at a depth of around 8–10 cm, loosely scattered through the lawn or in a border. They naturalise easily and spread a little further each year. Leave the foliage in place after flowering until it turns yellow — then you can mow it. Organically grown, certified NL-BIO-01, grown without artificial fertilisers or chemicals.
