There are other varieties of glory of the snow, but this Chionodoxa ‘Blue Giant’ certainly lives up to its name. The flowers are larger, the colour is more intense and the plant looks sturdier than most other Chionodoxa varieties. Early in spring, the bright blue, star-shaped flowers with their white centres appear – just when the garden is still coming to life. This organic glory of the snow not only provides a generous splash of colour, but also offers nectar to wild bees, bumblebees and other pollinators as they become active again after winter.

Small bulb, big impact

Blue Giant proves that you don’t need a tall plant to stand out. Plant a small group together and, before you know it, there’ll be a blue carpet amongst the still bare greenery. It’s precisely because the flowers are larger than those of other glory of the snow varieties that this one stands out even more. It combines beautifully with Chionodoxa Alba, snowdrops or early crocuses. No complicated planting plan is needed; this bulb thrives on its own.

A blue highlight for the first bees

By the time the last of the snow has melted, Blue Giant is often already in bloom. This makes it not only one of the first splashes of colour of the year, but also an important source of food for wild pollinators. The open flowers make nectar and pollen easily accessible to bumblebees, solitary bees and other insects that have few other options at this time of year. A small flower, then, but one that does its job at exactly the right moment.

Plant, let it naturalise and wait

Plant the organic glory of the snow bulbs in the autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained soil. Give them a spot in the border, under deciduous trees, or let them naturalise in the lawn. Under the right conditions, the bulbs will spread naturally, making the blue carpet a little bigger every spring. The 100% organically grown flower bulbs will do the rest. All you really need to do is wait for spring to arrive.
