Sedum Matrona - Compact - ORG

Sedum ‘Matrona’, also known as stonecrop, is a sturdy perennial with gray-green foliage that has a purplish sheen and dark veins. Starting in August, broad, pinkish-red flower clusters appear above the foliage; these remain on the plant through fall, adding color to the border just in time, when many other summer bloomers have already finished flowering.

Thanks to its sturdy, upright growth habit, ‘Matrona’ forms a beautiful, stable clump in the border. The flower clusters are a real magnet for bees and continue to attract butterflies even late in the season. Pair it with ornamental grasses, Verbena bonariensis, or Echinacea for a border that remains interesting well into fall.

A perennial for a sunny border

‘Matrona’ prefers to grow in full sun, in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates drought very well but does not like wet feet, especially in winter; therefore, choose a spot where excess water drains away easily.

Pruning is hardly necessary: it’s best to leave the spent flower heads and stems in place until spring. They give the garden a beautiful winter silhouette and provide shelter for insects. Cut the plant back to just above the ground in the spring, after which it will sprout anew. Propagation is easy by dividing the clump in the spring.

The flowers bloom from August through October. This way, Sedum ‘Matrona’ brings color and life to the border for weeks on end, right through late summer and fall.

The plant is delivered in a compact pot. This means you’ll receive a young plant that’s already well-rooted, which you can plant directly in the garden as soon as the soil is workable.
