When the Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ is in bloom, the garden stands still. Its large, perfectly spherical flower, a deep violet-purple colour, sitting atop a straight, sturdy stem nearly a metre tall, is one of the most impressive sights of the gardening season. It flowers in May and June — just as the tulips have finished blooming — and thus takes over seamlessly.

Position and combinations

Plant the Allium Purple Sensation in autumn, from September to November, at a depth of around 15 cm and 20 cm apart. It thrives in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Combine it with geraniums, salvia, roses or late-flowering tulips for a classic garden scene. After flowering, the seed heads remain decorative — even when dry, they look stunning in a vase.

Allium Purple Sensation flowers in May/June. The earlier the bulbs are planted in autumn, the earlier the flowers will bloom.
Alliums flower just after the “real” spring flowers and just before the first summer flowers, allowing you to create a garden that is always in bloom.

The flowers of Allium Purple Sensation appear from May onwards and will enrich your garden or balcony for 3 to 4 weeks.

The rule of thumb is to dig a hole about 2-3 times the height of the bulb. For Allium Purple Sensation, this means a depth of about 15 centimetres.
It is important to plant the bulbs at the correct depth so that they are sufficiently protected and will sprout at the right time.

The best time to plant Allium Purple Sensation is in autumn. At that time, the soil is still warm, which is good for root development, but it is cooling down, which is ideal for the dormant period of the flower bulbs.
Plant your bulbs before the first frost, so they have the best chance of surviving the winter.

For a nice, dense planting of Allium Purple Sensation, we recommend 30-40 bulbs per square metre.
Plant the bulbs about 15-20 centimetres apart so that they have enough space and can absorb sufficient nutrients.

It is best to plant the Allium Purple Sensation bulbs as soon as possible after receiving them. If necessary, you can leave them in their paper packaging and store them temporarily in a dry, cool place.
