Detail
There are flowers that brighten up your garden. And there are flowers that tell your garden a story. The Fritillaria meleagris belongs to the latter category. That slender stem, that nodding bud and then — when it opens — that beautiful checkerboard pattern of purple and white. It gives it a fairy-tale quality. She doesn’t demand attention, but she always gets it.
Location and care
The snake’s head fritillary is native to wet hay meadows and along rivers. That is why it thrives best in the garden in a damp to wet spot: under a tree, beside a pond or in a rough border with heavy soil. Plant the bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 8–10 cm and 10 cm apart. It naturalises easily — if you plant it this year, it will return next year and gradually spread.
Combining in the garden
Combine Fritillaria meleagris with other spring-flowering plants such as wild daffodils, grape hyacinths (Muscari) or stinzen plants for a completely natural garden scene. It flowers in April and May and attracts early bees during that period, which can make good use of the nectar.
Organically grown
Our snake’s head fritillary bulbs are organically grown and certified with the NL-BIO-01 label. Grown with care for the soil, biodiversity and the ecosystem.
