Enjoy homegrown red gooseberries
With 'Captivator', you can enjoy the simple pleasure of picking fresh gooseberries from your own garden. This lovely variety produces attractive red to dark red berries with a delicious balance of sweetness and refreshing acidity. Enjoy them straight from the bush or use them to make homemade jam, compote, pies and desserts. One of the best things about 'Captivator' is its almost thornless branches. This makes picking the berries much more comfortable, especially when children want to join in. A few thorns may still appear on young shoots. Small, pale flowers appear in spring, followed by developing berries that gradually turn red as summer progresses. Harvesting usually begins in July and may continue into August, depending on the weather and growing conditions.
An easy-going fruit bush for your garden
'Captivator' develops into a bushy, deciduous shrub that fits beautifully into a kitchen garden, edible border or mixed planting of fruit bushes. Choose a position in sun or partial shade, with fertile, well-drained soil that retains enough moisture. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly while the fruit is developing. Prune your gooseberry bush in late winter, before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged and inward-growing branches. On established bushes, remove one to three older, less productive branches each year. This keeps the centre open, allowing light and air to reach the younger shoots. In summer, you can also shorten long side shoots if needed to keep growth under control. 'Captivator' is also known for its relatively good resistance to American gooseberry mildew. As it is self-fertile, there is no need to plant a second gooseberry bush to enjoy a harvest.
Organically grown and full of flavour, this red gooseberry is a wonderful addition to any garden where fresh, homegrown fruit is appreciated.
