A border that looks good for more than just a few weeks. That is the idea behind the Long Flowering Border Pack – Sun – Organic.

The pack combines 16 organically grown perennial plants with 215 organic flower bulbs. The first flowers appear in early spring, after which one plant gradually takes over from the next. Crocuses begin the season, followed by Tulipa turkestanica and several ornamental onions. As the foliage of the early bulbs starts to disappear, the perennial plants grow and fill the space. Nepeta, Achillea and Verbena then carry the border through summer, while Rudbeckia and Persicaria provide colour well into autumn.

The result is a border in which one flower naturally passes the baton to the next.

A naturally layered border

The strength of this pack is not only its long flowering season. The variation in plant height also creates a naturally layered border. Crocuses, Tulipa turkestanica, Alchemilla and Nepeta can form the lower layer. Achillea, Rudbeckia and the alliums fill the middle. Persicaria and Verbena add height while keeping the planting light and airy.

Plant the bulbs between the perennials. By the time the foliage of the earliest bulbs starts to die back, the perennial plants will be growing over those spaces.

From fresh spring colours to a warm late-summer border

The colour palette changes naturally throughout the year. Spring begins with white, yellow and purple. The fresh yellow-green flowers of Alchemilla and the white and purple alliums follow. In summer, soft pink Achillea and purple Verbena add new tones. Later, the golden flowers of Rudbeckia and the reddish flower spikes of Persicaria create a warmer late-summer effect. Instead of everything flowering at once, the border changes character throughout the season.

A long flowering season for pollinators

The long flowering period also benefits visiting insects. Crocuses provide flowers early in spring. Later in the year, Allium, Nepeta, Achillea, Rudbeckia, Persicaria and Verbena are regularly visited by bees, bumblebees, hoverflies and butterflies. By combining plants with different flowering periods, the border offers flowers during a large part of the gardening season.

Where should you plant this border pack?

This pack has been designed for a sunny border. Choose a fertile, well-drained soil that does not remain completely dry for long periods during summer. Position the perennial plants first and then distribute the flower bulbs naturally between them.

The complete pack is delivered in one shipment, allowing you to plant the entire border at the same time. Water the young plants well after planting so they can establish strong roots. From there, the border can develop year after year into a living combination of flowers, foliage and visiting pollinators.
