    Detail
Spring flowering, Daffodils

Some daffodils are in a hurry, but not ‘Standard Value’. Whilst the rest of the garden has already finished flowering, this organic trumpet daffodil cheerfully carries on. Extra large, extra bright yellow, and the trumpet, which curves slightly at the edge, as if it too, wants a moment in the spotlight before spring is over. It isn’t the first to emerge, but it is one of the last still shining brightly when other daffodils are already beginning to wilt. Exactly the sort of stalwart that every garden could do with.

A classic that lives up to its name

It’s no coincidence that Standard Value has been a much-loved daffodil for decades. It was bred in 1949 by the Dutch breeder Peter Geerlings, and has been gracing gardens across Europe for almost eight decades ever since. The fact that something as simple as a yellow flower has stood the test of time says a lot: clearly, this is simply a very good design. Large flowers, a sturdy stem of around 40 centimetres and a slightly wavy trumpet give this daffodil a striking, classic appearance. No fuss; exactly what the name Standard Value refers to. Simply a daffodil that does what it’s supposed to do, year in, year out.

The last one still in bloom

Whilst many daffodils are keen to flower early, Standard Value takes its time. It is precisely this that makes this organic daffodil such a lovely addition to other spring-flowering plants. As early crocuses, grape hyacinths and many daffodils slowly fade, Standard Value brings colour back to the border. Plant the bulbs alongside early and mid-season varieties and you’ll extend the daffodil season almost effortlessly. What’s more, the flowers attract wild bees, bumblebees and other pollinators that are still searching for nectar later in the spring.

Easy to plant, years of enjoyment

Plant the organic daffodils in the autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained soil. They thrive in borders, under trees, in a natural lawn or simply as scattered clumps throughout the garden. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, so that the bulb can store enough energy for the following season. ‘Standard Value’ is a reliable perennial that flowers year after year and also looks lovely as a cut flower. A timeless classic that you’ll never regret choosing.
