Detail
Papillon is French for ‘butterfly’, and anyone who sees this remarkable organic daffodil in bloom will immediately understand why. Instead of a closed trumpet, Papillon Blanc has a graceful, split corona that unfolds like soft butterfly wings amongst the pure white petals. This gives the flower an airy, elegant appearance that immediately stands out amongst other spring-flowering plants. It also gives off a pleasant, subtle fragrance and attracts wild bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other pollinators.
A timeless classic
Papillon Blanc was first introduced in 1940 by the Dutch breeder J.W.A. Lefeber and was awarded an Award of Merit in 1962. Today, the American Daffodil Society classifies it as one of the ‘Classics’ – daffodils that, even after decades, remain among the most highly prized cultivars. This comes as no surprise, as some flowers simply never go out of fashion. The combination of a refined shape, fresh white petals and a soft, creamy crown has made Papillon Blanc a standout feature in the spring garden for decades.
What makes a split-corona daffodil so special?
In most daffodils, the trumpet forms the recognisable centre of the flower. In a split-corona daffodil such as Papillon Blanc, however, the crown is unfolded and divided, so that it lies over the flower like an extra wreath of petals. This gives the daffodil its characteristic butterfly shape and a fuller, softer appearance.
Organically grown and an eye-catcher for years to come
Plant the organic daffodil bulbs in the autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Papillon Blanc combines beautifully with tulips, hyacinths and other spring-flowering plants and is equally at home in a border or in a natural planting scheme. Under the right conditions, the bulbs naturalise well, ensuring the clump returns fuller each spring. The bulbs are 100% organically grown, with care taken for the soil, the plants and biodiversity. This way, you can enjoy a daffodil that is as graceful as it is timeless, year after year.
