Hyacinth Fondant with Artstone bowl - ORG

Growing hyacinths indoors is a tradition dating back to the nineteenth century, when glass bulb vases were displayed on windowsills. This ‘Hyacinth Fondant’ comes in a modern version: a round Artstone bowl, moulded from natural stone powder, complete with bulbs for you to plant yourself.
Within a few weeks, in a cool, light spot, the cluster of flowers will emerge. Fondant takes on a soft salmon-pink colour, a shade you don’t often see in other hyacinths and which suits both a sturdy wooden sideboard and a light-coloured windowsill.

The scent that fills a room

Hyacinths owe their name to Hyacinthus from Greek mythology, a young man who, according to legend, was transformed into a flower after his death. The hyacinth is renowned for its scent, and rightly so, as few flowers smell so intensely. A single bowl is often enough to fill an entire room with a sweet, slightly spicy fragrance that heralds the arrival of early spring.

From bowl to garden

The hyacinths are supplied with a beautiful Artstone bowl. Don’t worry about overwatering; the bowl has a raised base and a drainage hole through which excess water drains away naturally. A rubber plug is included to seal the hole if you wish to place the bowl indoors. Once the flowers have finished blooming, that doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye. Simply plant the spent bulb in the border after the last frost, and there’s a good chance it will reappear next year; perhaps a little more subdued than the first time, but just as welcome. That’s how a gift continues to thrive effortlessly in the garden.
