Detail
Shade is not a problem. It’s an opportunity.
Many gardeners view it with mixed feelings: that dark corner behind the shed, under the big tree, or along the fence where the sun simply never shines. The tendency is to do nothing with it, perhaps lay a few paving slabs.
But shady spots have something special about them. They call for plants with character; plants that don’t scream for attention, but quietly and confidently go about their business. That’s exactly what we’ve put together for you. This organic border pack for shade fills one square metre with four varieties of perennials that thrive in spots where there’s little direct sunlight. No guesswork, no disappointments later on.
The plants in this package
A stalwart in any shade border. The soft, pleated leaves resemble velvet and hold water droplets like tiny mirrors after a rain shower — a sight in itself. In spring, a light cloud of yellow-green flowers appears above the foliage. Lady’s mantle grows steadily, crowning itself with foliage colour right into autumn and asking for virtually nothing in return. It owes its name to the pleated shape of its leaves, which in the past were reminiscent of a medieval cloak.
Whilst most perennials are already on the wane by August, the Japanese Anemone is only just coming into its own, and continues to do so well into October. The flowers, in shades ranging from white to deep pink, appear on sturdy stems 90 to 120 centimetres tall. Anemone hybrida is a hybrid of various Asian species and combines the best of both worlds: the elegance of the wild species with the hardiness of a cultivated garden plant. Fully hardy, it becomes fuller with age and spreads gently via underground runners. Bees and hoverflies are drawn to its late flowering, just when few other nectar sources remain.
Few plants combine so many qualities in such a small space. This semi-evergreen groundcover retains its glossy, dark green leaves for most of the year and forms such a dense carpet that weeds simply don’t stand a chance. In early spring, bright yellow flowers appear, hanging above the foliage like little lanterns. Epimedium Perralchicum is one of the most drought-tolerant species within the barrenwort family and thrives under trees and shrubs, precisely where other plants give up. Hardy, low-maintenance and reliable year after year.
As early as April, this spurge is on display with bright yellow bracts that retain their colour for weeks on end. It is not the flowers themselves that stand out, but the leaves surrounding them, which act as a natural spotlight. After flowering, the foliage turns a fresh green and in autumn the plant turns a warm orange-red, offering three seasons of enjoyment in a single plant. Euphorbia Polychroma grows to a height of 30 to 40 centimetres, has a compact, dome-shaped habit and a sleek silhouette that adds structure to the border. Please note: the milky sap released during pruning can cause skin irritation; gloves are no luxury.
A smart choice
Shade-loving plants that truly complement each other in terms of growth habit, height and season are hard to find if you search for them individually. This pack is a carefully considered combination: early bloomers alongside late bloomers, ground-cover plants alongside more upright varieties. And because they are all perennials, you can enjoy them year after year, without having to replant or invest again.
Life and movement, even in the shade
Japanese anemones and cushion spurge attract hoverflies and early bees searching for nectar away from the usual sunny routes. The barrenwort provides pollen early in the year for solitary bees just waking up. Even in the darkest corner of your garden, you can contribute to a healthier ecosystem.
Planting in shady soil: how to do it right
Shady soil is often drier than you think, especially under trees where roots absorb a lot of moisture. When planting, work a generous layer of leaf compost or peat-free potting soil into the ground for better structure and moisture retention. Maintain a planting distance of 25 to 30 centimetres and water regularly for the first few weeks. After that, these are self-sufficient plants that require little care.
Certified organic
Grown without artificial fertilisers or chemicals. The plants are supplied in a half-litre pot (P9), small in size but with a sturdy root system ready to take root immediately. Organic cultivation is not only good for the plant itself, but also for the soil, the insects and the whole garden around it.
