Detail
Viking aronia, also known as Viking purple chokeberry, is a hardworking shrub with something to offer in several seasons. Clusters of white, sometimes softly pink-tinged flowers appear in spring and provide an attractive food source for pollinating insects. By late summer, they develop into clusters of deep purple-black berries.
‘Viking’ was selected for its vigorous growth and generous crops. Its berries have the naturally tart, slightly astringent flavor for which aronia is known. They are particularly well suited for juice, preserves, jelly, sauces or recipes combined with sweeter fruits such as apples.
An edible shrub with ornamental value
After harvest, ‘Viking’ changes character again. Its green foliage develops rich shades of red and purple, making this aronia just as valuable in an ornamental planting as it is in an edible garden. Plant it in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Once established, it is a resilient, easy-care shrub that works beautifully as a specimen, in a mixed edible landscape or as an informal fruiting hedge.
‘Viking’ is self-fertile, so a single plant can set fruit. Planting several shrubs is an easy way to create a larger harvest as well as a fuller natural planting.
Organically grown with care for healthy soil and a lively garden.
