Detail
With winter barely behind us, Puschkinia Libanotica Alba is already ready to go. This organic white striped squill flowers in early spring with compact clusters of pure white, star-shaped blooms. Not large flowers that demand all the attention, but rather a fresh, snow-white appearance that neither you nor the pollinators are likely to overlook in early spring.
White amidst the budding greenery
Whilst many early spring bloomers opt for yellow or purple, Puschkinia Libanotica Alba keeps it simple. Pure white – that’s all it needs. It’s precisely amidst the fresh spring greenery that this colour really stands out. Plant the bulbs in a group and you’ll get a carpet of tiny white stars that combines beautifully with blue scillas, botanical daffodils or early-flowering crocuses. It’s the sort of plant that makes the rest of the border stand out better, without seeking the limelight itself.
Early food for the first bees
This organic spring-flowering plant blooms just as wild bees, bumblebee queens and other pollinators are searching for their first food. The open flowers make nectar and pollen easily accessible and make a valuable contribution to biodiversity in the garden. They may be small flowers, but for insects they make a big difference, particularly at this time of year. That is why Puschkinia fits perfectly into a natural garden where not only the flowers, but also the life surrounding them, is important.
Planting and naturalising
Plant the organic bulbs in autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained soil. They thrive in rockeries, at the front of a border, beneath deciduous shrubs or in a pot on the patio. Under the right conditions, the bulbs naturalise effortlessly and form an increasingly dense clump each year. Low maintenance, great results. Just the way you like it, really.
